8 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE

According to data from the World Health Organization, air pollution causes the deaths of 8 million people around the world every year. In other words, 9 out of 10 people are exposed to polluted air throughout their lives.

1.4 MILLION HEART ATTACKS

Globally, air pollution causes 1.4 million heart attacks, 2.4 million cases of heart disease, and 1.8 million cases of respiratory disease and lung cancer every year.

52 THOUSAND PREVENTABLE DEATHS

In Türkiye, air pollution claimed seven times more lives than traffic accidents in 2017. If air pollution levels had been reduced to the World Health Organization’s guideline values, 51,574 deaths could have been prevented.

ISTANBUL, BURSA AND ANKARA

According to the analysis presented in the Black Report (Kara Rapor), the three provinces in Türkiye with the highest number of deaths attributable to air pollution in 2017 were Istanbul (5,851 deaths), Bursa (3,098 deaths), and Ankara (2,139 deaths).
